Chord charts and changing key mid-service

Chords live inline with the lyrics, a pasted chord sheet aligns itself, and transposing moves every screen the band is reading.

Last checked

Chords are stored inline with the lyrics, in the bracket style musicians already write in — [Am], [C/E], [Fmaj7]. That keeps each chord attached to the syllable it lands on, so nothing drifts when the text wraps to a different width on a different screen.

Pasting an existing chord sheet

Sheets in the wild are written with the chords on a line above the words, spaced out with the right number of characters. Paste one in and ChristChant reads those columns, works out which word each chord sits over, and merges the two lines into a single chorded lyric.

  • Slash chords, sus2/sus4, add and altered chords are all recognised.
  • Both ♯ and ♭ are understood, as well as # and b.
  • Section headers stay section headers rather than being read as chords.

Transposing

  1. With the song live, step the key up or down a semitone at a time.
  2. The stage screen updates immediately and shows the move, from the original key to the new one.
  3. A paired phone can send a transpose too, so the call can come from the stage rather than the booth.

Transposition changes what is displayed, not what is stored. The saved chart keeps its original chords, and resetting to the original key is always one click away.
